Job Description – Organizer 

 

SUN is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that addresses racial and economic inequality through strategic research, popular education and organizing. We organize our diverse base to build a stronger community that values the lives of Nashville’s people of color and working families. By organizing our communities, SUN fights poverty with strategic action around public investment and city planning to create thriving neighborhoods and shared prosperity.

 

Position Summary 

SUN is seeking a passionate Organizer to join our team. The ideal candidate is a skillful relationship and power builder, with a deep commitment to justice and dignity. The organizer will develop deep relationships with residents and community leaders in targeted neighborhoods to fight for good jobs, affordable housing, and budget priorities that meet community needs. The organizer will coordinate organizing, canvassing, leadership development, and campaign efforts. Start Date: March 1, 2023

 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Plan and facilitate organizing events such as phonebanks, canvasses, rallies, and house parties. 

  • Coordinate volunteer outreach and leadership development. 

  • Enter necessary data to track attendance, outcomes and other deliverables.

  • Write scripts and copy for canvassing, phonebanking, texting, pop-ed, and other organizing related work. 

  • Support SUN in implementing social media strategies for organizing such as creating videos, or copy to generate volunteers or event sign ups. 

  • Build meaningful partnerships with community and policy allies to support campaigns, our members, and core organizing work.

  • Participate in strategy development and planning to grow the organizing program and advance campaigns.

  • Other reasonable duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications 

  • Must demonstrate commitment to racial, gender, and economic justice.

  • Minimum of one year experience setting up organizing in communities knocking doors, street canvassing, tabling, mass texting. 

  • Ability to work independently, navigate obstacles, discern priorities, meet competing deadlines and handle multiple projects. 

  • Strong database management skills that inform analysis of the base and strategy.

  • Ability to work varied hours including nights, weekends and holidays.  

  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred, although not necessary.

  • Must have reliable transportation and the ability to travel to any part of Tennessee when necessary, including work or travel on weekends and evenings when necessary.

  • Successful individuals will value our communities and model unity and equity in Nashville and beyond.  

  • Tech experience: Action Network, Votebuilder, Scale To Win, CallHub, Spoke (or other P2P texting platforms), Google Forms, Google Spreadsheets.

 

Work Environment 

  • Based in Nashville. 

  • SUN staff are currently on a hybrid work schedule. 

  • Ability to travel required. 

  • Repetitive use of computer and office equipment.

  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds when setting up venues for meetings and events.

Compensation 

  • Competitive salary starting at $50,000 with increase based on experience.  

  • 100% of health, dental, and vision premiums for employees and family members.

  • 12 days per year of paid vacation time increasing with tenure up to 20 days. 

  • Up to 12 paid sick leave days per year
