Stand Up Nashville calls on Airport Authority to include community benefits in expansion

On September 13, in front of a packed boardroom, Jackie Sims and Anne Barnett presented Stand Up Nashville’s vision for how the airport expansion can be used to create good jobs and fight poverty in Nashville.

Two community benefits were highlighted during the presentation. First, the creation of a training program that would provide the skills people need to get good jobs at the airport. Second, the creation of a first source hiring policy focused on Nashville’s Promise Zones, which are federally designated areas of high unemployment and poverty. They pointed to the successes that LAX and the New Orleans airports have had with these strategies.

The Board of Commissioners wants to discuss our proposal in more detail soon. In the meantime, we’ll continue to host community meetings in Nashville’s Promise Zones to engage communities in this process.
