OUR BIG FIGHTS
We stand up. We speak up. We fight.
NASHVILLE FAIRGROUNDS SPEEDWAY EXPANSION
Bristol Motors Speedway pushed a plan to expand the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway without input from the community. While they didn’t bother to ask, Stand Up Nashville did. We canvassed neighborhoods and organized the community. The pressure applied forced Bristol Motors Speedway to pump the breaks on their rushed plan.
Amazon's housing equity fund analysis
In the absence of robust public information about Amazon’s plans in Nashville, we examined how the Amazon housing fund has operated to date across all three metro regions it covers. In this report, we outline our findings, the questions and concerns they raise, and principles that we believe would ensure that Nashville has enough quality housing that our communities can afford.
Get it right Bill
The Get It Right Bill was won by our efforts to pressure Metro Council. It created more accountability to the Nashville construction code. It was eventually gutted by the state legislature. This is why we must organize at every level where power rests.
CARES ACT
We fought for the $121 million in CARES Act funding money (121 million) to go directly to residents and small businesses most impacted by the pandemic. Hispanic/LatinX and Black Nashvillians have been hit the hardest by the pandemic. The disparity in infections, deaths, and access to health care exposed Nashville’s systemic inequity. SUN is fighting for transparency and efficiency so relief in such situations gets to our neighbors facing eviction, foreclosure, and food insecurity as quickly as possible.
STATE INTERFERENCE
SUN is part of a statewide effort to fight corporate influence in the state legislature. We have seen increasing state preemption on behalf of corporations that leave municipalities in Tennessee holding the back. Read our report for examples of recent state legislature overreach.
DSON
#DONTSELLOUTNORF
The tornado that ripped through Nashville on March 3rd, 2020 left devastation across the entire city, none more prevalent than the destruction done in North Nashville, a historically and predominantly Black community. In partnership with The Equity Alliance, we fought for the continuation of recovery efforts in the North Nashville community and in establishing long-term community revitalization and economic development opportunities. Natural disasters should not exacerbate the gentrification that is currently happening in Nashville’s Black communities. but instead these communities should be properly supported so they can get back on their feet.
BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE (BCLI)
SUN has a mission is to give power and voice to the most marginalized residents of Nashville. We are building a leadership program in partnership with Urban Habitat that will allow Black, Brown, Immigrant, and working-class individuals to learn the functions of how our city is operated and give participants a real opportunity to join Metro Nashville’s numerous boards and commissions so that decisions on how public resources are used support the ability of all Nashvillians to thrive and prosper.
MUSIC CITY CONSTRUCTION CAREERS (MC3)
The MC3 training provides a gateway for local residents to gain access to Building Trades’ registered apprenticeship programs. Students learn about safety, the industry & its tools, blueprint reading, construction math, rights on the job & much more. This is how we plan to build pathways out of poverty and give our most marginalized communities a chance to thrive.
COMMUNITY BENEFITS AGREEMENT
SUN and the community won a historic CBA on the MLS soccer stadium project in 2018. This monumental victory shows that large developments can be done with high standards and the community at the center of the process. Now, we have to make sure all of the benefits included in the agreement are implemented in a timely manner. We have established a Community Advisory Committee to oversee the implementation process, but it is critical that the broader community also holds Nashville Soccer Holdings accountable to its commitments.
STAND UP & SUPPORT
You can stand up with us and help our fight by giving what you can. Every donation matters and goes towards funding our efforts to place the people of Nashville at the center of big decisions.
Stand Up Nashville is a fiscally sponsored 501c3 so all donations are tax deductible.
